Best tips when choosing a sewing machine

A few tips and hints to help you decide which machine will suit you best!
I find that the best machines to get a really good finish for bag making are flat-bed industrials - in my experience, makes such as Singer, Juki and Brother provide good quality machines that will last.
The next question is where to get your machine from - it's not essential to go hunting for brand new (although there are some really fancy functions available these days!). Best bet for second-hand is to keep an eye on ebay if you know what you are looking for - I recently bought a flat-bed industrial Singer from ebay for £65, what a bargain!
A fav place of mine is Tyson Sewing Machines in West London - they have a fab selection of second-hand and new machines and their prices always seem reasonable.
If you find that you are really getting into making handbags, and you have spare cash to invest, then I'd recommend getting a walking foot cylinder.
Getting yourself set-up with the right tools can really make a difference to your final product - and they certainly make our lives easier!
